FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I come to see the dentist, even if I'm not in pain?

At Parkwood Dental, we recommend our patients come in at least twice a year for regular hygiene appointments. Patients with gum disease or other medical considerations will need to come in more often to keep the disease under control.

What is done at the hygiene appointment?

At your hygiene appointment, your hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth and give customized at-home care recommendations. Once a year, new x-rays will be taken and evaluated by our dentist during an oral health exam. We do this so we can catch any problems, such as cavities, cracks or abcesses- as they are developing or go unnoticed as they can become serious, costly problems.

What type of toothbrush should I use?

We recommend brushes with soft bristles- these bristles are actually thinner and can clean between your gums & teeth much more easily. Almost all electric toothbrushes have soft bristles and are a good choice since they provide more scrubbing motions and many include a timer.

How many times should I brush per day? And for how long?

We should all brush at least twice a day, but at night before bed is the most important & effective time to brush. Never eat anything before sleeping or you'll have to brush again. Brush for 2 minutes and make sure to brush your tongue!

How often should I floss?

We like to say that you don't have to floss all your teeth- just the ones you want to keep! You should floss at least once a day if you want to prevent cavities between your teeth.
